Get Your Thong On with Cho Aniki On the Virtual Console!

I had to comment on this week’s Wii Shop Channel update as it’s a bit, how do you say… “eccentric”. Cho Aniki is a scrolling shooter in which you are accompanied by muscle bound men as they shoot “loads” of ammo out of the top of their heads. And let me tell you, these guys are packin’ some heat… in more ways than one if you catch my drift (wink, wink). These giant men are fighting the evil emperor of Planet Builder which is invading nearby solar systems in search of protein for some de-lish energy shakes. Wait a second… is he going to need some fries with that shake?! 😉

Cho Aniki was originally made for the TubroGrafix 16 in Japan and its later installments have been made for several other gaming systems. The original title is available today on the Wii’s Virtual Console for 900 points along side Final Soldier, another side scrolling shooter game for the TurboGrafix 16 (in which your craft looks oddly similar to the on in Galaga) and Groovin’ Blocks, a musical puzzle game for WiiWare. However, I think these two titles will be overshadowed by Cho Aniki’s “towering” reputation!

Cho Aniki (TurboGrafix 16, 1 player, 900 Wii Points)
Take on the roll of Idaten or Benten who are fighting through hordes of enemies to take down Bo Emperor Bill, the ten-time victor in the Great Galaxy Bodybuilding contest. As the protein supply is slowly diminishing, he invades neighboring solar systems in order to create protein factories throughout the universe. Aided by Samson andAdon, two near identical body building brothers, Idaten and Benten look to keep this evil emperor from accomplishing his goals.

Final Soldier (TurboGrafix 16, 1 player, 700 Wii Points)
In the 23 century, invaders from the future suddenly attack Earth. Controlling a fighter created by the world’s scientists, you rise to meet the enemy. Collect power-up units, such as LASER, E-BEAM, FIRE and MISSILE, and then equip them in Options to launch a variety of attacks. For each of these weapons, you can freely select from three different types in SET-UP. Anticipate enemies’ strikes and deftly switch between weapons to defeat the invaders. In addition to NORMAL GAME, there are also 2 MINUTE GAME and 5 MINUTE GAME score-attack modes. The most perfect blend and balance of any game in the series, Final Soldier is a title you don’t want to miss.

Groovin’ Blocks
(WiiWare, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)
A music-based game like no other, Groovin’ Blocks adds innovative musical game play to an addictive action/puzzle game foundation. Play to the rhythm of the music to increase your score, and try to hit “Superbeats” to double your multiplier! Go for the high score in each of the 27 stages as you collect stars to unlock 15 levels of power-ups! Groovin’ Blocks features three skill levels, from the accessible Casual to the fiendish Hard mode. Play with your friends in co-op mode or against them head-to-head. Head-to-head brings it up a notch as the power-ups now become attacks on your opponent. Play head-to-head with people of all skill levels using a golf-style handicapping system.
