MotionPlus Technology Up for Grabs

Some bittersweet news for Nintendo fans has arrived today. The technology found in the MotionPlus will not remain a Wii exclusive. InvenSense, the company who designed the device, let the world know that many other companies are quite interested in this gaming breakthrough. Joe Virginia of InvenSense had a little chat with EuroGamer recently and had this to say:

“Of course we’re incredibly pleased – delighted would probably be a better adjective – that Nintendo approached us… but it’s not an exclusive relationship… I can’t get into details about other folks that are interested in this technology, but as you might imagine of course there is more interest out there.”

As a gamer, I’m glad more people will have access to the next step in gaming but as a single system owner and long time Nintendo fan, I’m a bit unnerved for the future. As the Wii already lacks significantly in the “core” gaming department, I’m forced to ponder the events that would take place if the 360 or PS3 attained this technology. The developers that cater to the more mature audience favor those systems already. If these consoles achieve the same level of control, the one thing Nintendo has up on the competition, there would be little reason for the developers to pay any attention to the Wii. As I’ve said before, the MotionPlus might be the rebirth of the Wii but now it seems like it could very well become the harbinger of its downfall.
