Miyaomoto: The Walt Disney of Our Time.

Wow, talk about an honor. In a recent New York Times article, Shigeru Miyamoto was compared to the likes of Walt Disney. As Mario is one of the most recognizable characters in the entire world (even beating out popular celebrities such as Matt Damon), it should come to no surprise that Miyamoto has grown into such a worldwide icon.

“What’s important is that the people that I work with are also recognized and that it’s the Nintendo brand that goes forward and continues to become strong and popular,” he said by way of comparing Walt Disney’s role in the larger brand with his. “And if people are going to consider the Nintendo brand as being on the same level as the Disney brand, that’s very flattering and makes me happy to hear,” he added, through an interpreter.

Yes, Miyamoto is an admired man in the world of gaming, but I never knew he was so well appreciated by the rest of the world. He has brought to life some of gaming’s most admired characters and franchises including the Zelda, F-Zero, Pikmin, and Donkey Kong  series along side many others.

Personally, I can see the “resemblance” between Disney and Miyamoto; they both helped revitalize their professions, they both created beloved characters, and they both are, like said in the article, “personally responsible for the consumption of more billions of hours of human time” than many others.

So here’s to you Shiggy!
