Square-Enix Acknowledges Difficulties with WiiWare Development

Recently at the GDC, Fumiaki Shiraishi of Square-Enix let fly a few unfortunate things about their upcoming WiiWare title, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King. Due to the limited time and space they had to work with, there were many aspects to the title that were lost or reduced including artwork, fighting mechanics, and overall size. As large scale developers, they were really gung-ho about their venture on the smaller platform and tried to bite off more than the Wii could chew.

“…It basically boiled down to the fact that Square was too cavalier with its design concept, and continually had to scale back to fit to a small enough size that it would comfortably fit on the Wii’s internal hard drive.  The Wii only comes with 512 MB of memory. The end result is a game that is actually less Final Fantasy and more Sim City…”

Though I’m sure it’s going to be a fantastic game, I was disheartened when I saw that “multiple battle systems were ultimately scrapped.” Anyways, check out the whole article over at to see the rest of this story. Anyone planning on buying the WiiWare title should definitely read.
